Jerry Davich with the Post-Tribune newspaper just did a great story taking folks behind the scenes at the Bartholomew Funeral Home in downtown Valparaiso, Indiana. The independently-owned funeral home has been in business since 1892.
Davich covers a lot of great territory: caskets, the FTC Funeral Rule, embalming, personalization, funeral costs, and changes in how funerals are being conducted. He even climbed into a casket to see how it felt to lay in one (pretty comfortable). Here’s the opening of his column:
Death.
The word alone scares and humbles us, yet intrigues and fascinates us.
Some of us live our fragile lives with gusto, simply to defy death. Others live in the shadow of death, fearing its inevitable grasp.
The last place we want to visit, unless forced by fate, is a funeral home.
It addresses death. It embraces death. It profits from death. So I did it for you.
